When I was 13 years old it was the dawn of the internet, and like many others I wasted countless hours surfing the web and stumbling upon random sites; learning many new things about the world... things I didn't even know I wanted to learn about. One day, I was searching for information about the future; people's impressions and ideas of what our world was to be like "when I grew up". In my search I stumbled across a global project known as The Venus Project, the brainchild of 98 year old social engineer and inventor, Jacque Fresco. Simply fascinated by the artwork, design and architecture that Fresco had been creating since the 70's, I spent many hours in awe of his imagination. Not fully comprehending or understanding the philosophy behind the incredible pictures, The Venus Project became a lost memory among the hundreds of hours spent surfing the web.
More than ten years after first discovering The Venus Project by accident, I stumbled across it again whilst researching an alternative to the current dysfunctional political and economic system. Once I got past the excitement of re-discovering the images that had fascinated me as a young teenager, I began studying Fresco's philosophy on a Resource Based Economy and a future by design. I won't sit here and say that The Venus Project is a perfect system, and neither will Jacque, but I believe it is a lot better than what we have at the moment.
It has become increasingly clear that we need change. Real change; not a change of so called 'leaders', politicians or political parties, but real change for our civilization as a whole. It's a completely different way of thinking and it's hard to comprehend, but the problems that we face cannot be ignored any longer. Is it time for a fresh approach?
"Knowing is not enough; we must apply.
Willing is not enough; we must do."
- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
A link to The Venus Project's website is listed below... it's an interesting read to say the least. It gets you thinking and the ideas are certainly a step away from simply ticking the boxes on a ballot paper and waiting for the next puppet to fuck up.
